Ocean surface wind speeds from the SMAP radiometer are now available to the public at RSS. Some aspects of the The SMAP wind algorithm are still under development, but we want to make the BETA release available to scientists for research and evaluation purposes. The strength of the SMAP wind speed dataset compared to other missions is in its unique capability to retrieve winds in extreme storms, even under rainy conditions. More details about the wind algorithm and examples of SMAP wind fields for some recent storms are described in the SMAP Wind Speed page, and our blog on the intense cyclone Winston. We welcome any feedback about this dataset to our support mailbox firstname.lastname@example.org .
